Reception accorded to winners of Inter University Championship
Kottayam: Mahatma Gandhi University accorded a reception on Monday to the sportspersons who represented the varsity at the All India Inter University Athletic Championship 2011-12 and bagged top positions at various events. Merit awards were also presented by Vice Chancellor Rajan Gurukkal during the function.
An amount of Rs.1,26,000 was distributed among 28 athletes, two coaches and two managers. Cash awards of Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000 and Rs. 2000 were presented to the winners of the first, second and third positions respectively of various events. The University authorities said this was the first time that the coaches and the managers, who were instrumental in bringing laurels for their wards, have been presented with cash awards by the varsity.
Satheesh Kochuparambil presided over the function. Syndicate members N. Jayakumar, George Varghese, C.H. Abdul Latheef, Controller of Examinations Thomas John Mampara, and Finance Officer Abraham J. Puthumana participated in the function.
According to the University authorities, the academic year 2011-12 has been productive for the University School of Physical Education as it had won three All India titles and six South Zone titles at various events. The sportspersons representing the University had also stamped their authority in other sports competitions as well. Notably, the University had emerged the winners of Cross-country (Women), Badminton (Women), Chess (Men) and Handball (Men) at the various inter-university championships.
