Mini colleges planned for Wayanad: VC
Kalpetta: University of Calicut Vice-Chancellor M. Abdul Salam has said that the university plans to set up ‘mini colleges' in Wayanad to solve the backwardness of the district in the field of education.
He was speaking to presspersons here on Friday after a visit to various educational institutions under the university in the district.
Mr. Salam said the mini college was an innovative concept of the university in the higher education sector. Close to 100 students and basic infrastructure, including buildings, were essential for setting up such institutions, he said.
The university planned to set up such institutions in the district if local bodies or private individuals provided the basic infrastructure, he said. Priority would be given to launching job-oriented courses such as web designing, interior decoration, and business studies in the mini colleges.
Mr. Salam said he would convene a meeting of representatives of students, parents, colleges, and political parties to discuss various issues relating to higher education in the district by the middle of April.
The university had submitted a proposal to the State government to set up a Tribal Study Centre at Chethalayam, near Sulthan Bathery, on 10 acres of land, he said. A distance education examination centre of the university would set up at Sulthan Bathery soon, he added.
