Statistics seminar begins at university
Malappuram: A seminar on ‘Recent trends in statistics and related areas' began at Calicut University on Thursday. Organised by the Department of Statistics, Calicut University, the seminar also marked the annual conference of the Kerala Statistical Association (KSA).
Inaugurating the seminar, university Vice Chancellor M. Abdul Salam described statistics as a subject relevant to all academic subjects. He said a seminar on statistics should not be confined to statisticians and other experts of statistics. Rather, he said, it should involve scholars and researchers of all academic areas.
He said even though he studied statistics 40 years ago, the subject always remained relevant to him.
P. Yageen Thomas, president of the Kerala Statistical Association, presided over the function. N. Unnikrishnan Nair, former Vice Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology, delivered the keynote address. He also released a souvenir of the seminar.
K. Kumaran Kutty, former head of the Department of Statistics, Calicut University; Raji Pilakatt from the Department of Mathematics; and P. Anil Kumar, head of the Department of Statistics, Farook College, spoke. C. Chandran, Head of the Department of Statistics, Calicut University, welcomed the gathering. M. Manoharan, organising committee secretary, proposed a vote of thanks.
