Kozhikode: The internationally famous music band Indian Ocean will perform on Sunday at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM-K) during Backwaters ’10, its annual management and cultural festival featuring students from major business schools in the country.

The festival, which got going on Friday, will showcase a plethora of events. Students from 26 countries will participate in the events, some of which are online, its organisers said.
Over Rs.7 lakh is being offered as prizes. ITC, Vodafone, Nokia, and Indigo Nation are partners of the event.

Indian Ocean’s programme is projected as one the highlights. Backwaters’10 will have a nation-wide rock competition - Battle of Bands - and an intercollegiate dance (Navras) and fashion (Couture) competitions. The festival will conclude on Sunday night.

Event organisers claimed on Friday that the event had already generated a lot of buzz among B-school students in India and abroad. Its website www.iimkbackwaters.com had received more than five lakh hits in just one month, from around 10,000 users across 26 countries.

The events will feature programmes to test skills in marketing, human resources, operations strategy, acquisition strategy for Cognizant and a social business plan competition.

The social business plan competition has been projected as a major event. More than 120 students have given their business ideas that can contribute to the growth and welfare of the nation.

The final round will have eight contestants presenting their business ideas in detail in front of a panel of judges. The winners will be awarded prizes worth more than Rs.1 lakh.

There will be contests for finance enthusiasts and those with the correct trading aptitude and a series of events on the campus like ‘point-of-sale’, which is a marketing event to maximise sales, ‘mall maul’, which is designing of a mall from a business perspective, quizzes, debates, and creative writing.
